It this is a fitted carpet rather than a rug then it is probably of non-woven 'tufted' construction. The pile fibre is irrelevant.
The structural integrity of these carpets is reliant on a latex compound. when wetted, the filler within the compound will expand but the primary backing , which is normally synthetic fibre (polypropolene) will not. The resultant corrugation is known as rippling.
When the carpet is thoroughly dry, the rippling should subside. This may take several days, dependant on the degree of over-wetting and the subsequent drying conditions. If any remedial action is taken the carpet may become stretched and permanently distorted.
