You have a wonderful way of putting into words things that we know, but rarely think about and the way it can affect our daily lives.
Here in the UK, when two people meet, they'll say something like "How are you?" to which the standard reply will be "OK" or "Alright". Occasionally someone may say "Not great" or something else slightly negative.
I genuinely feel that I have a blessed life. I have a successful business (a success not measured by the bottom line of the balance sheet), I have a gorgeous wife, great kids and live in a village rather than a town or city. When people greet me and ask me how I am, I'll reply with honesty and say "Life is wonderful!" and depending on the person/circumstances I may elaborate.
For those I am meeting for the first time, they are often caught on the back foot, not expecting such a joyful and positive response to an everyday courtesy greeting. It really helps the meeting take on a positive purpose. So as you say, "You can't control situations; only your responses" and being positive really does bring rewards.
To take a few words from your post above, Be a winner, not a whiner
