Jim,
"Dont forget the Golden rule about this bussiness, You do have the option of turning this rug down and walk away, It may cost you a customer, But thats cheaper than buying the rug as well."
That was good advice.
If I give advice about the specifics of a cleaning issue then I need to have sufficient information to be sure that that advice is of value.
Two different dye stabilisers had already been mentioned, as had the posibility of using a dry cleaning agent (OMS). With the information available what more can sensibly be added? Talking about sodium thiosulphate, alum and other exotics would likely serve only to confuse and the use of flood techniques to flush out the vagrant dye is not a technique for the un-practiced.
Sometimes well-intentioned advice can lead to problems when applied inappropriately or incompletely, whereas the advice you gave (as quoted) was a sensible response.
