I totally disagree with Rickie and Jim. IMO, if you are selling yourself as a professional rug cleaner, then your customers deserve the highest level of knowledge and expertise possible. To me, this means first class formal training. To gain your knowledge through the back door from someone who said this, or someone who posted that on a forum is not acceptable to me and certainly wouldn't be to my customers.
Last month, I attended an IICRC course by Ellen Amirkhan and Aaron Groseclose on this very subject of rug cleaning. It was three days of intense and exciting study that left me mentally drained. I wouldn't have missed it for the world. In those three days, I have only just seen the tip of the iceberg!
I hear that there are now some very good on line/dvd rug courses available, but nothing compares to that class room experience where you can instantly have any queries or uncertainties answered, and you don't get distracted as you would with home study.
In todays workplace, if we were employed in an office, on the factory floor, a construction site etc. etc. etc. we would, from time to time, be sent on training courses by our employer. They don't do this without good cause. Training is an investment in your business, it's not an expense.
Safe and happy learning
The Ken
