Don't skip the science.

There's no real evidence that Moses existed. Too hard to pin down in time. The stories attributed to him are unreliable but it partly depends on how you interpret them. Consider the yarn where he climbs a fiery mountain with his comrades to meet God. If he and his people wandered through Sinai then there's a good chance the group turned south along the west coast of Arabia where there were good pastures in those days (it's desert now). The entire area is volcanic, some of it active in the era of Egyptian civilisation, Moses' era. Quite probably Moses and his people encountered a fiery volcano and climbed it in religious awe. There can be no doubt that primitive people see volcanoes in religious terms. I note with interest that they encountered what sound like gem deposits. I've checked. There are such deposits in the area. The British ethnologist Field has an interesting take on this story. He says that when nomadic tribal groups pass through other tribes' territories they are usually given safe passage providing they respect the local gods. If the locals saw their god or gods as residing on mountains, a common idea, then Moses and the elders may have climbed such a mountain out of respect for the locals. Of course we can't prove this but at least it's speculation based on current scientific evidence of human behaviour.
The Moses saga obviously cannot be taken as straight forward history. The saga is probably a mix of fact and fantasy.
