This is supported by a fossil record which shows an increase in complexity and diversity over time. The first amphibians before the first reptiles before the first mammals before the first primates before the first humans.
Studies of bacteria and our knowledge of domestic dogs show how, in a short time, species can accumulate beneficial mutations and become different from the parent species. It is not difficult to imagine how much change could occur over billions of years.
