On a rare occasion, the insertion of the viral genome can occur in a sperm or egg. If that germ line cell us used to produce an offspring, then that offspring will carry a chunk of retroviral DNA in their genome.
As it turns out, about 8% of our genome is made up of remnants of retroviruses over about 200,000 insertions total. Out of those 200,000, less than 100 are not found at the same base in the chimp genome.
Any thoughts Bible literalists?
