The message is a bit blunt, and pertains to today, not to 1600. Yes, gravity and electricity were discovered by people of faith. But wait. . . Who discovered electricity? One of the major contributors to the many discoveries was Benjamin Franklin, who was an atheist. It was he who determined the signs of polarity we still use today.
In astronomy, the discoverers of elliptical orbits (Kepler) and heliocentricity (Galileo among others) were either afraid to publish their results because of church sanctions, or were punished for their discoveries.
I don't think faith as such need be in conflict with good scientific work. If, on the other hand, people still insist the earth is 6000 years old, that humans and dinosaurs walked the earth together, etc. , such people do not have great careers in geology, archeology, anthropology, or a number of other fields. Depends on what kind of faith we are talking about.
