Hi Gene,
I don't believe windmills require a hole lot of light over the winter as long as it's on the cool side. Depending on what part of NH you live in I would take them in the beginning to middle of Nov. I would also advise against leaving the other one in the 2*2*2 pot outside since it will freeze solid.
I remember living in the Lakes Region and the ground could freeze solid, 6-8 FEET if there was no snow cover. Even though Ty TY says they will survive the winter to zone 3 they just won't.
If you want to plant the big one outside I would give these heat cables a try. I'm using the under my giant robustas and banana grove. They are working very well.
I wrote more about them on palmsnorth.com more of a west coast site. I just found this forum about a month or so back.
