It's the latitude Paul, and I'm at a much higher one than you. You would get much more heat units than we do in the summer, there fore Needle Palms should put on more growth in the warm months for you. Yes, your winters may be colder, but with a couple of zones worth of mulch it is no challenge to bring a Needle palm through your winter. At the lower latitudes Needle palms can thrive in more shade or dappled light but at out latitude here at 48 degrees north they prefer full sun. Ya follow? I'm in zone 8b and I would say the mildest areas of our island would be more like a zone 9a. Even this past winter and it was bad, they didn't go below 20 F. and I did. I still consider myself to be a very northern zone for Needle palms and minors. Not so much the winter cold I worry about, but the summer heat. Cheers, Joe
