The Lowe's stores here in Michigan are carrying red and coral colored dwarf crape myrtles which claim they can be grown as a dieback perennial through Zone 4. It does explicitly state ROOT hardy through Zone 4.
Has anyone in colder regions had any real success with these? I planted 3 crape myrtles almost 10 years ago. They DO survive as a dieback plant, but I've gotten virtually NO flowers. If they do bud and try to bloom, it is invariably not until October, and they always get zapped by frost. I've tried various mulching and shelter schemes, and they've always died back to the root.
