lasiocarpa should do well for you. If it was vole damage you would notice.The only thing I could suggest is place rat poison around the stock...cover the "stub " in plastic..them mulch about a foot thick.
With both basjoo and sikkimensis, they are protected here. we all use different methods in Niagara. For me, it is one bag of leaves...thats it. Sikkimensis seems less hardy as fewer will come back with the same protection as basjoo.BUT..this is just my personal observation.
Broadway is a neat place for sure. Got a Dynamite crape myrtle that survived unprotected, but it did die back the first year, but it is growing like a weed now, Tuscaloosa variety shows no signs of life
