The sad news was received from Nashville this Sunday morning that Jimmy C. Newman, a friend of Jim Reeves since the "Louisiana Hayride" days, passed away Saturday night.
Jimmy was also known as the "ragin' Cajun," and had a particular style of music that was of regional origin. Jim also covered a Newman hit, "A Fallen Star."
In Larry Jordan's book, "Jim Reeves: His Untold Story," Jimmy recounted visits to Jim and Mary Reeves' home with his wife, and how Jim would get his guitar and sing. He also told of how Reeves tried to get him to record a song Jim had written called "I'm Gettin' Better," but Newman's retort was that being Cajun, he didn't know what he was supposed to be getting better from!
You can read more about this kind and talented man by clicking the link below.
I neglected to mention that Jimmy C. Newman and Jim Reeves collaborated on a song called "Step Aside Shallow Water." The Holland DISinformation site claimed today "A demo recording by Jim Reeves surfaced many years later on the Galaxy CD album JIM REEVES - THE LEGEND." The false impression is deliberately and pettily left by the webmaster that Galaxy debuted the song. Of course that's not true.
That song (and other demos like the previously unreleased "I'm A Hit Again,") made their world premier on VoiceMasters in *2003* (on the CD "The Unforgettable Jim Reeves-Live") whereas Galaxy used it (and some other VM tracks) in *2008.*
(The VM CD made its debut on my site in 2003 and then in 2010 Amazon began carrying it too.)
