When he began working full-time in radio in Henderson, Texas, starting in 1947, Jim would write songs, often on the back of KGRI's stationery. Since the station was only licensed for daytime-only operation, and signed off the air at sunset, Reeves would sometimes linger behind "after hours" with engineer John Bolin and record demos on acetate disks. (Contrary to Streissguth's assertion that these were "taped," stations like KGRI in that era did not have tape machines then; they cut disks or later used wire recorders). Jim did "How Many Tears From Now" on several occasions. One version featured just him and his guitar, and was overdubbed by VoiceMasters, which scored the world premier of this song. Another rendition Jim recorded is more up-tempo and includes a small band. Reeves wrote the song. The earliest copy of this composition has been dated to late 1947.
