Jim had to hear a song in order to be able to sing it. He did not read music per se. This is not to say, however, that he was altogether unfamiliar with the nomenclature of sheet music. From being around pro musicians he also was conversant with some of the terminology they used. Incidentally, Jim Reeves penned more than just "a couple of songs." He was a surprisingly gifted songwriter, but would record demos of his songs, and rely on others to sit down and write the line score so it could be copyrighted.
