Being a blood relative doesn't mean you have the same talent that you are a relative of. Tony Wall comes closer to attaining the Jim Reeves feel for a song than anyone I have listened to. He's quite a talent and sounds very much like Jim. However,there was one other singer I remember from the mid-'60's that really sounded a lot like Jim as well. Does anyone remember Stu Phillips? I remember his first few LP's because my Mom had them. Stu came along shortly after Jim's passing and his records were also on RCA Victor and produced by Chet Atkins. I can only recall two LP's that he did. The first was called "Singin' Stu Phillips" and the second was "Grassroots Country". These albums were really good and if they were on CD, I would purchase them in a minute! I don't think they have ever been released on CD though, and I don't remember if he ever recorded anymore LP's after these two. I never really knew much about him either and he seemed to just fade away. If anyone knows any more about Stu or if his albums are available on CD, I would sure be interested to know.  Post a Response

I am the first to say there will only be one Jim Reeves. For many years I have tried to support or be actively involved in any kind of healthy or commercial promotion of Jim’s music with no finantial gain to myself, I will add. There are many good “Jim Reeves style” singers; my favorite is Oliver Barratt from Ireland. Al Grant from Scotland, Paul Wheater from Yorkshire and the outstanding Arni Benoni. After some 34 years on the road, the loss of Lena my wife and several knockbacks, at 56 I am in what I hope are the autumn of my years. I have now found what utopia can be…singing Jim’s music and keeping his style of song alive. I do not earn a lot from it and maybe one day just as much needed to pay the bills… I know one thing; I won’t take up flying lessons! Mike, I have a cd of Stu Phillips on loan to a Radio dj friend at the moment, “Our Last Rendezvous” LSP4012 when I get it back next week I’ll send it to you. Really appreciate the kind words. Posted by Paul on September 18, 2009, 4:14 am, in reply to "Re: Who in Jim's family sounded most like Jim?" 69.159.6.205 Hey Mike, Just a very short note re Stu Phillips...born in Montreal,raised in Calgary and still a member of the Grand Ole Opry(I think) Stu lives in the suburbs of Nashvillefrom what I have read.At one point in time he was the owner of a winery and still may be.While in Canada he was known as the "the western gentleman".He had a television show on CBC for close to five years called "The Red River Jamboree".Over the years I have often heard him referred to as the Canadian JR because of his voice.If you google his name I am sure you will find most of his LPs listed...whether they are available as CDs I cannot say (perhaps others i.e. Roy will have some info on this matter).As well he can be seen on You Tube. Now that you mention it, I remember that LP too! I had forgotten about that one, but yes, that's another one my Mom also had. As soon as you mentioned it, I could even remember the album cover. Stu is sitting across the table from a woman in what looks like a restaurant or something, right? Anyway, would love to have it! Thanks again, and thanks too for all you do to keep Jim's music alive. That's way more than I ever knew about him! I did look on line last night, and there are a few CD's available, but not the earlier ones that I'm familiar with, unfortunately. As a matter of fact we still have a little snap shot of Stu hugging my wife behind the old Ryman in Nashville ( of course with my permission). I have all 3 (and I think that's all his RCA LP's) that were released. He had a rich mellow voice much like Jim's. I once heard the WSM-Nashville DJ Eddie Stubbs interviewing Stu. Stu said that he just like Jim had toured South Africa and had even recorded songs in Afrikaans like Jim. Of course those recordings will probably never be released. Jay Perry  Post a Response

Stu was an ordained minister and also recorded songs in Africaans?! I wish they would be released here in the USA! I had a feeling that those first three LP's were the only ones on RCA. However, I did see a few others listed on amazon.com, as I said earlier, and I just saw one titled "Blue Canadian Rockies", which is, of course, one of the songs Jim recorded for "The International Jim Reeves" LP. Would love to hear how much Stu sounds like Jim on this one!  Post a Response

I don't think he even tries to sound like Jim. they both have very smooth and rich voices, but very different. He is a minister and I have also met his wife Aldonna. I love her name. Very different.
