Jim Reeves & Roger Miller Posted by Garry Herring on October 11, 2008, 6:01 pm 86.2.20.117 Hi everyone, first of all, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who answered my posts over the last few months, and special greetings to all the other Jim Reeves fans out there. Right, there was one thing that I was wondering about, and that is: in all of the articles and biographies that I have read on Jim Reeves over the years, i have never seen any that tell of Jim ever crossing paths with Roger Miller, the writer of several of Jim's hits. I mean, where Roger's songs 'sent' to Jim? or where they good friends that met from time to time? I know that Roger arrived in Nasville sometime around the late fifties/early sixties. Roger was a fantastic guy, very funny and wrote some real gems. I think him and Jim would have got on famously, as Jim had a great sense of humour too. I was listening to Roger singing his 1982 hit "Old Friends" the other day, and on the song he is joind by Willie Nelson and Ray Price. I really recommend that If you have not yet heard this song then please try to get a copy. It is fabulous. Who knows, if Jim had lived then I am pretty sure that he would have joined these three on this recording as it is a song that would have suited Jim's style. kindest regards GARRY  Post a Response

It has a huge book inside as well, which is very interesting reading. According to Porter he said Roger was a songwriting genius and in his early days in Nashville he popped a few little pink pills. Porter said Roger told him to never put his pills in the same pocket with his change cause one time he swallowed 35 cents by mistake. Roger was a funny guy. Jay Perry  Post a Response

Like yourself,I have wondered if by chance, Jim and Roger ever performed together or somehow crossed paths. After an exhaustive search, there doesn't seem to be an answer. We will have to rely on Larry's book to clear the fog on this one. Two or three years ago, on the American station CMT, ( we get the cable and satellite feed here in Canada ) there was a broadcast highliting the singing talents of country music stars' sons and daughters. For the life of me, I can't remember who else was on, but the one I will always remember was Roger Miller's son Dean. If I were in another room and heard him singing, I would think it was Roger himself. To this day, I must say the talent similarity was amazing. Little wonder he is an entertainer himself. I wonder if he has his fathers talent in song writing. Thanks everyone !! Besides recording some of Roger's songs, Jim also ran into him at clubs down in Printer's Alley, an area of Nashville that was an entertainment district (and still exists). Musicians used to go down there and jam, including in venues where jazz was performed. Jim sometimes followed Roger to the stage, and in my book I have eyewitness accounts of some of their interaction. Roger also showed up with Willie Nelson one night at a venue in Texas where Jim was getting ready to perform, and asked Reeves if they could appear on stage. Since Jim hadn't had anything to eat, he agreed to let the guys do a set while he ran out and had a quick meal. There are other amusing, offbeat stories about Roger which will be in my book.  Post a Response
