"The Essential Jim Reeves" Posted by Gianluca Cludi on September 29, 2008, 3:52 am 151.30.19.196 Probably for a mistake, The version of "According to my heart" on the double anthology cd "The Essential Jim Reeves"(Sony-Bmg 2006), (originally released in 2003 under the title "Jim Reeves - Anthology") is not the 1956 hit version (as indicated in the booklet) but the rejected slow version from December 1955 session who appear for the first time (in Europe) in 1989 in the now deleted Bear Family 4 cd box set "Gentleman Jim, 1955-1959"(originally intended as the first of a series of separate Bear box sets with chronologically treatment of all Jim's discography, but, instead, Bear Family in 1994 prefer to issue the 16 cd box set "Welcome to my world" with all Jim's studio recordings on one massive box set). If the double anthology cd "The Essential Jim Reeves" contain the wrong version of "According to my heart", the Bear 16 cd box set contain a wrong version of " Losing your love" (1961) (probably a outake from the same session) : on the Bear box the line "I forgot to kiss you and hold to your charms, success seems like nothing to these empty arms" (around min. 1:23) is sung more slowly and less linear rather than the hit version who appear on the double anthology cd "The Essential Jim Reeves". Re: "The Essential Jim Reeves" Posted by Mike Slater on September 29, 2008, 3:29 pm, in reply to ""The Essential Jim Reeves" " 64.12.117.201 The version of "Losing Your Love" that you mention from the 16-CD box-set is the take that was released as a single, which actually does make it the original, although most fans are probably more familiar with the take that was released later on the "Distant Drums" LP a few years after Jim's death. However, there are a few songs from the Bear set that are not the original master takes- "What's In It For Me" is phrased slightly different in a few places and is not the original from the "Moonlight and Roses" LP. "(It's No)Sin" and "We Could" are also sung quite differently from the original LP versions as well. The title song from "Kimberley Jim" has a music intro that is MUCH different than the one used in the film and LP version and instead of the chorus singing the last verse of the song, Jim sings this version all the way through. Still, there are other songs on the Bear set where more than one version is featured. I like this set a lot, but the tracks were rather inconsistant in this manner throughout. I know Jim's songs only throgh the some various anthology on Lps and cds printed (or avaiable) in Europe in the past 25-30 years. About Bear Family: I am a great fan of the Bear products (I have buy over the years more than 150 box-sets of this label, included 4 box of Jim!) and I am sure who the Bear Family care and perfectionism for the sound quality can reveal sometimes nuances and details often buried on the original sound of Lps, singles or others label's anthology. And sometimes the original master tapes Bear used are not, both for mistake or for audio quality priority, exactly the same as that used for originals lps and singles. My only audio criticism about Bear Family Jim's 16 cd box is for the mastering often too soft (is a 1993 mastering after all) and, on some stereo songs, new 1993 mixes with the backing a little too behind Jim's voice rather than the original releases or following best-of anthologies of Jim. At last we get to hear alternate versions of some of Jims familiar recordings. I mean, it isn't that RCA Victor(or whatever they are called these days) would ever let us hear these by choice, would they? I only wish they would let us have a whole CD's worth of outtakes/ alternative versions!! Your observations about the Bear Family mastering sounds pretty accurate, but I was quite pleased with the mastering, although, yes, there were a few differences in some of the mixing. I, myself, noticed a remarkable difference on "Is It Really Over". The strings sound a bit softer on this version than on some other CD's I've heard. I also noticed that the backing vocals are missing completely on "Not Until The Next Time".
