Jim's Surviving Contemporaries Posted by Bob Robyn on June 12, 2008, 6:22 am 70.15.110.53 With all the losses there have been lately of people who who performed in Jim's era, I thought it would be good to pull together the names of some of the ones who are still with us, particularly the ones who are still performing. First comes to mind is Ray Price. Heard him about 5 or 6 years ago and I was blown away by how good he still was. Bill Anderson wrote Jim's "I've Enjoyed as Much of This as I Can Stand". He is also still performing. Others: Little Jimmy Dickens Kitty Wells (retired) I am sure there are more and those of you who regularly hear the Opry may be able to add to the list. I should imagine that she is still on the go, but getting on a bit. Lovely lady mind you. Always has time for her fans. Of course they were alive at the same time, but so was I. I don't remember the Hag's career kickin' in until about 1965. The Possum definitely had a career while Jim was alive. It must be almost 50 years since Ira died. Does George Hamilton IV still perform? I think George Hamilton still appears on the Opry and I read on another forum that Charlie Louvin still tours. He toured a while ago as a member of the ''Country Legends'' show hosted by Bill Anderson, here in Eastern Canada. One person that performed that night that hasen't been mentioned is Jean Shepard. He has recently been recording for Heart of Texas (Tracy Pitcox's excellent label) in Brady, Texas. I have a photograph of Jim and Ferlin sharing a microphone. George Hamilton IV is very active in the United Kingdom. Many Brits are campaigning for George and Slim Whitman to be inducted into the Country Hall of Fame for their exemplary services in promoting Country music internationally. George is also extremely popular in Canada; in fact he has recorded several albums of Canadian songs. Come to think of it, I also have a photo of Jim in a group with Slim.
