Another singer has died Posted by Steve Drummond on May 9, 2008, 10:44 am 74.197.33.115 Funeral services will be held today in Corona, Calif., for singer Jerry Wallace, who scored a No. 1 country hit in 1972 with "If You Leave Me Tonight I'll Cry." Nicknamed "Mr. Smooth" because of his vocal style, he died Monday (May 5) from congestive heart failure at age 79. A native of Guilford, Mo., Wallace enjoyed success in the late '50s and early '60s with a string of pop hits including "Primrose Lane" and "In the Misty Moonlight." Signed to Mercury Records in 1965, he moved to a stronger country sound and charted 35 country singles, including three other Top 10 hits, through 1980 on a variety of labels. The popularity of "If You Leave Me Tonight I'll Cry" was heightened when it was featured in the soundtrack of Night Gallery, a popular TV show in the '70s. There is a cute story about how Cindy Walker had pitched a couple of songs to Jim for what turned out to be his last recording sessions. One of them was "In the Misty Moonlight," which she had high hopes Reeves would record. But he didn't care for the song, even though Mary loved it. A short time later, Jim was getting his haircut after hours, when a song came on the radio by Jerry Wallace. Jim's barber recalled "he jumped up and said 'That's my song!'" It was Jerry Wallace, singing "In the Misty Moonlight." That changed Jim's opinion of the number, and he decided to cut it on his next session, which was on July 2, 1964. It took Jerry Wallace's fine singing to demonstrate to Reeves that it was a good quality song. Jim liked Jerry very much, and I agree with Reeves' opinion. I'm sorry to hear Mr. Wallace passed away.  Post a Response
