(no subject) Posted by Bob Robyn on July 1, 2007, 5:59 pm 24.152.207.185 Does anyone know the timing of the Jim Reeves/Patsy Cline duets in relation to the 1985 movie on Patsy's life, "Sweet Dreams"? I feel like they came out before that. I was wondering if there was any deliberate co-ordination there. Patsy's legacy certainly was helped by that movie. Jim's has continued without one. (I saw him just in the last day or so being promoted on one of these Country Classic infomercials.) along with Marty, Cash, and Patsy, as well as others, I am sure. It's amazing, he has been almost 43 years and he is still being sold on TV. Admittedly, Patsy has been longer, but Jim never had a movie. Just a voice and wife, both from God.  Post a Response

Re: Electronic Duets - Patsy Cline/Jim Reeves Posted by Don Streeter on July 3, 2007, 7:35 pm, in reply to "(no subject)" 67.39.22.104 Bob, The aformentioned duets were released in 1981, by RCA which had the Single 45 "Have You Ever Been Lonely" which was also on the RCA "Jim Reeves/Patsy Cline Greatest Hits" LP/CD and it was a #5 hit in 1981. "I Fall to Pieces" was the other Single 45 released on the MCA Label and included in the MCA LP/CD "Patsy Cline/Jim Reeves Remembering." I believe that the single record charted but was not in the top 40. I have all but the I Fall To Pieces 45 in my Vinyl archives. Considering it was produced strictly by mechanical jockying of the original vocals from the master tapes devoid of the original intstrumental parts, then putting on a whole new band with the jockeyed vocals, the recording engineers did a wonderful job on it. If you have the "Gentleman Jim - Story of a Legend Video," Owen Bradley explained exactly how it was done. A very interesting story it was. Also it was 4 years before the Sweet Dreams movie, so it had nothing whatsoever to do with that film. Regards, Don  Post a Response

In fact I was also filming the entire morning of the interview with Owen Bradley and Bill Harris both in the studio and after, a private interview with Owen that David did and Jerry Bradley,Owen's son. The engineer, Bill Harris had to work with the 3 track master of Patsy and the 3 track master of Jim which they then placed onto a 24 track tape and built up around it, however to avoid wear and tear on Jim’s master he transferred Jim’s part onto quarter inch tape and literally sliced edited with a razor. Only slight pitch correction was necessary. What was interesting however, and this is not common knowledge is that there was a third song from Patsy also prepared for a duet. I think it was the song “That’s My Desire”. Her 3 track master was on the 24 track I cannot remember if Jim’s was. I have a photo of the tape box to back up this information and I also filmed it. So if the 2 songs recorded had not been so much hard work and time consuming we would have seen 3 duets perhaps. And although they did use a computer to set and memorize fader settings and so, they, unlike these days did not use it to edit tape. Just good old fashion razor and skill of Bill Harris. If any one would like to have photos from this morning session just drop me an e –mail. For the record, the clip in the program last some 2 or 3 mins tops and took all morning to compleate!  Post a Response

However something you said in your post has got me thinking, you said that in order to avoid wear and tear on the master recordings Jims voice part was transferred on to a quarter inch tape. It has got me wondering if over time the source tape will degrade perhaps to the point that the master tapes will no longer be usable and the legacy Jim left behind will be lost. I wonder if magnetic tape does degrade over time anyway,and if so is anything being done to preserve the material that Jim has left us with. It's just a thought i know but do you happen to have any ideas i'm sure the same thing must apply to other stars of yesteryear not and only Jim. John.  Post a Response
