kimberly jim film/DVD? Posted by big don (Big Don) on 20/5/2007, 12:14 pm 70.88.156.197 another question for "the gang": how in the world do i obtain a good copy of the "kimberly jim" film? i bought what i thought was an original on ebay but it looks awfully washed out. in addition, does anyone know who owns the rights to the film now? is there any chance of it ever coming out on dvd? i thank you all for the prompt and courteous anwers to my inquiries. you are grrrreat jim reeves aficionados. Message modified by board administrator 20/5/2007, 10:24 pm Richard Weize of Bear Family (who is in Nashville currently on one of his scouting expeditions) released "Kimberley Jim" on DVD. He claims to have "licensed" it from Connie Sanders, but according to the Reeves family, Mrs. Sanders doesn't own the rights to the movie. She only had a print of the film, and several of those copies are floating around. Mary Reeves bought all the rights, and it remains a valuable asset of the Reeves estate that unfortunately has been exploited by various profiteers around the world. Incidentally, the copy of "Kimberley Jim" that is available on DVD does not contain all the footage shot. Certain scenes were deleted by the producers from the final cut, possibly due to the length of the film. Mary went after those on a trip to South Africa but they have yet to surface.  Post a Response

There has been some debate as to whether they acquired the film legally or illegally. I Don't know the answer but what i DO know is that bear have done a great job and the quality is good. Posted by Mike Slater on 20/5/2007, 1:55 pm, in reply to "kimberly jim film/DVD?" 152.163.101.9 Don, the copy of "Kimberley Jim" that you purchased on e-bay sounds like it must be the VHS tape that Mary originally sold through the museum. I purchased it from there and the quality is exactly as you described...very washed out and dark. You could purchase the DVD from Bear Family, but whether it will play or not on your player may depend on where you live. Check the region code if you look it up. I can't remember if this DVD is playable in all countries or not. If you live in America, then you will surely have no problem. As for the quality of the picture and sound, it is absolutely great! I had seen the movie when it was first released in the theatres, and I knew it didn't look anything like that awful VHS tape. I was very relieved after viewing the DVD to see how good it really looked! As for what Larry said, yes, it is a shame that certain projects are released sometimes without the original people involved seeing any profit from its' release. This should not be happening. The "Kimberley Jim" DVD may very well fall into the catagory of "bootleg", but I have to admit that I'm very happy I purchased it. The packaging and quality of the disc is top notch and is well worth the money. It even includes a beautiful booklet inside all about the movie, with loads of information and photos. Outside of this Bear Family release, "Kimberley Jim" has never been officially released on either VHS or DVD, and it doesn't look like it ever will be at this point. If the companies that own these things flatly refuse to put them out, then the fans are going to seek out and purchase any release they can find, as long as it is in good quality.
