Tony Wall's CD Tribute to Jim Reeves Posted by Larry Jordan on 19/5/2007, 2:41 pm Message modified by board administrator 19/5/2007, 2:51 pm Although I am always glad when other artists cover Jim Reeves songs, I have seldom been much impressed by any of their attempts, since there just isn't anybody who can compare with Jim. However, I have to break my own rule here and take a minute to congratulate Tony Wall in the UK for the fine effort he has made on his new CD. The backing tracks are beautiful and Tony's voice is smooth and resonant. Very pleasant listening indeed. In fact, I would go a giant step further by saying that Tony puts Daniel O'Donnell to shame, even though Daniel earns the big money covering Reeves classics and even selling out shows in Branson, Mo. during his PBS specials. On songs like "It Hurts So Much To See You Go," Tony handles the low notes with ease. Another cut I like on Tony's CD is "Missing You." And I'm especially fond of "Moonlight and Roses," which I think is the best track on the album. In fact, I have listened to that song over and over because I enjoy Tony Wall's version so much. I don't think Tony is trying to emulate Mr. Reeves, but he does sing in the same vein. So if you'd like to hear a guy do some of Jim's songs in a fresh way, check out Tony's new CD. You won't be disappointed. It is called, appropriately, "Tony Wall Sings Songs of Jim Reeves." He has every reason to be proud of it. Who knows? Maybe he'll be the next hit-maker in Europe. A postscript to tell you is that Tony Wall has done A LOT for Reeves fans over the years, including being a driving force behind the "Gentleman Jim" video. I related almost the same things to Tony when I first heard it. It is an excellent Tribute to Jim. Tony does a wonderful job on all the selections.
