Link: Hologram demo
This is not science fiction. The estate of Buddy Holly has made a deal with a company called Hologram USA Entertainment to put together a new touring show, with the blessing of the singer's widow, Maria Elena Holly.
The company is also working on a show centered around the wonderful pianist Liberace, which will debut in Las Vegas.
Using images and music of Buddy Holly, Hologram USA is putting together a "live" show on the late rock 'n' roll star.
Wikipedia explains that "Holography is a technique which enables three-dimensional images (holograms) to be made. It involves the use of a laser, interference, diffraction, light intensity recording and suitable illumination of the recording. The image changes as the position and orientation of the viewing system changes in exactly the same way as if the object were still present, thus making the image appear three-dimensional."
If somebody could go to all the time, effort and expense to construct a hologram show of Buddy Holly, I think (with all due respect to him), that Jim Reeves would be a good choice for a touring hologram show as well. After all, Jim is internationally popular even today, and I'm sure sold far more recordings than Buddy did.
There is a demonstration online of a hologram that is part informative and part downright silly, but if you click the link below, you can see it work. They used a Nashville audience for this demo.
I'd be interested in knowing what fans think of this idea. Imagine Jim's Oslo concert being reconstructed by computers into a "live" hologram performance that would be almost as if Jim was appearing on your local stage singing in front of you!
