I, finally, received "The Jim Reeves Anthology" DVD today.
And, it was worth the wait I’d say.
The overall picture quality of the 1950’s TV performances was very good.
Some were not so good and some were excellent.
The kinescopes are what they are, which were not very good to begin with. A kinescope is a TV performance filmed by a camera directed to the TV screen. But, we can be glad , this way, these performances has survived.
The rare performances are particularly interesting. "Aura Lee" was never released on record and his performances together with June Carter is fun viewing.
I was surprised the footage from the Netherlands April 17th 1964 was included. I'm very happy. It's wonderful seeing a, admittedly, tired Jim perform a fast version of "I Love You Because" at the airport.
The footage of Jim, The Blue Boys and the Anita Kerr Singers in Njårdhallen, Oslo on april 16th 1964 is the best live performance of Jim ever filmed.
Unfortunately it seems the footage on this DVD release is, what's the word?, oversaturated.
At least it looked this way on my TV / DVD setup.
The detail level looks better on my VHS tape recordings of the show I believe.
But, the sound couldn't be much better.
The biggest surprise to me with this release was seeing the 1963 Studio B footage of Jim recording "Blue Canadian Rockies". This film is unique and historically significant.
Let's hope for a volume 2 featuring the rest of the available studio B footage.
And, who owns the T. Tommy footage?
This release comes highly recommended to all Jim Reeves fans and more casual buyers.
It's a DVD which shows Jim singing and talking live in a variety of interesting venues.
The interview portion also includes many rare photos of our man.
You'll treasure these performances! I know I did.
Sincerely,
Mr. Even Bjerkelien, Norway
