The Distant Drums Single (Cat # 47-8789) was #1 in the US in May and June of 1966 (ironically it knocked an Eddy Arnold song off the #1 spot I Want to Go With You, which was #1 for 6 weeks), and the LP was also #1 on the Country LP Chart and #21 Pop and made RIAA Gold (at least 500,000 units sold), thus there is a copy of the record in Gold along with the cover hanging on the gold album wall in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville TN. It also made it to #3 in the UK on their all in one Pop LP chart. I have seen the Gold record with my own two eyes, and it had a lot if not all of the songs on it which were never put on LP Albums to that date. Mary liked to do that, and she got requests to do that, which is why so many different albums were released after Jim died, there were a lot of songs (single releases) not yet available on LPs to put on new LP releases. Then they of course did a lot of overdubbing when the new song list was exhausted, and also the demos were then reworked just like the newfound songs are reworked today. It's truly amazing that there was and is so many different recordings, it's hard to keep track of them all.
BTW the Distant Drums LP was released twice on CD,in 1998 by DCC/RCA Special Products, and on one of the 2 for 1 CDs put out in 2004 by BMG UK & Ireland. It was paired with another #1 (Country LP Chart, ) LP from 1965, Up Through the Years.
Regards,
Don
