I guess so many have a story to tell on this one. In our Dining Room we have a signed and numbered copy of a painting of the Titanic by the artist Simon Fisher and counter signed by Millvina Dean! It's been hanging there for ten years and I never knew she enjoyed Jim's music! As a Christian Evangelist I have used the Titanic story on many occasions to present the Bible's message of the Gospel. It is a great illustration of our danger in neglecting God's love, His Son and His warnings!
Last year I was preaching in Southampton for a week and discovered that I was staying in a house next door but one to Fred Fleet's house in Norman Road. He was the lookout in the crows nest who first sighted the iceburg and gave the warning. He survived and gave very telling evidence at both the inquests in US and UK. Sadly he hung himself in the back garden of the house around 1969 if I remember correctly just about three weeks after his wife died. I thought that too was a sad but touching tale. I also purchaed a very interesting book at the small museum there called "The Crew of the RMS Titanic". All it is is a list of the names, jobs and addresses of every crew member on the ship and whether they lived or died. I drove round some of the streets close to where I was staying looking at the houses where some of these dear folk had stayed. Southampton must have been totally decimated by what happened with so many not coming home. If only we could learn to learn from history!
