50 years ago this day Jim recorded one of his biggest hits before "He'll have yo go": "Partners"
(written by Danny Dill). This song was recorded in the wake of Jim's old friend Johnny Horton
hits with saga songs as "Battle of New Orleans" and climbing at n. 5 in the country hit parade.
A month and half after (July 24, 1959) Eddy Arnold covered "Partners" for his 1959 album of
folk songs (always on the wake of Johnny Horton's hits). Eddy's version of "Partners"
(only album release, no single) is instrumentally more spare, less dramatic and intense and
with a "storyteller" nursery rhyme feel (very similar to Eddy previous hits "Tennesse stud")
while Jim's version is a superior version with piano and vocal chorus.
Strangely, "Partners" was not included on good cd compilations of Jim as: "The Essential"
(Sony-Bmg 2 cds, 40 songs, 2003), and "Rca country legends" (Buddha-Bmg 1 cd,
16 songs, 2001).
Always for Jim
A big Ciao from Italy
