After Jim and Dean were killed, Mary took steps to try to help Dean's widow, Barbara Manuel. A benefit concert was organized which featured a number of country music personalities raising money for the family, Mary affirmed that Dean was on official business for Jim (which enabled Barbara to claim certain benefits), etc. However, Mrs. Manuel filed a big lawsuit against the Reeves estate seeking hundreds of thousands of dollars -- which was more like millions of today's dollars. Mary was upset by this and told me that Barbara didn't even wait for her to make an offer of settlement. This was Mary's perspective on it anyway. I am sure Mrs. Manuel has a different view. The matter was settled out of court.
