The Academy of Country Music has announced that Dolly Parton is this year's recipient of the Jim Reeves International Award, in recognition of her success in bringing country music to a global audience.
The award in honor of Jim was instituted in 1969, two years after he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. The award is presented to an individual, not necessarily an artist, for outstanding contribution to the acceptance of country music throughout the world.
Last year's recipient of the award was Dick Clark. But a couple of years ago, Buck Owens received the accolade, which was a travesty because Buck ripped off Jim and didn't pay him for some shows Reeves did at Owens' club in California. Every time Jim encountered Buck after that, Owens ran out the back door. Mr. Reeves despised Buck and would turn off the radio when one of his songs came on. Buck, of course, outlived Jim by several decades, and went on to become a tremendously wealthy individual, partly on the strength of his goofy "Hee Haw" TV show, on which Mr. Owens displayed zero talent and an annoying series of facial ticks and weird mannerisms. As someone once said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public."
Although the The ACM Awards will be broadcast live from Las Vegas on April 5 at 8PM ET on CBS, the Jim Reeves International Award will not be televised. Apparently, it's just not important enough. They need time to air rock acts that masquerade as country music and lip sync their music. Note the awards are held in Vegas -- about as far from a country music setting as you can get.
Nevertheless, congratulations to Dolly Parton, as she is deserving of this award! -- Julie
