The master tape of that song was later found -- including the original version where Dottie Dillard had cut a "guide" vocal and then little Steve Moore was brought in to replace her singing. This was very unusual in those days because they normally did not sing to tracks -- meaning the standard way of doing things was for everybody to be in the studio at the same time.
I am not sure why RCA did not replace the bad acetate with the master once it was found, but since their overdub was orchestrated and recorded to fit with the acetate, it might have been problematic to make it match the master.
