Dave,
A lot of magnetic tape noise issues can be electronically altered (cleaned up if you will) when original masters are digitized, and this is known as digital remastering, usually an electronically enhanced process where noise is removed during the remastering process. The CEDAR noise reduction system is one such device, and has been used by RCA and Bear Family on some of its Jim Reeves releases. I'm sure Voicemasters uses similar devices on its remastering efforts as well. I have the Bear set and have not noticed any really bad noise on any of the tracks. The most noticeable noise I can recall on a JR cut is at the beginning of I Love You Because when the harp is playing at the beginning. I believe the three track tape machine they recorded on at Studio B (which is now on display in the CMHOF Main Building)they had the recording level at too low a setting and when they mixed the master tape down to two channels from the three. they had to increase the volume level higher than desireable on the channel the harp was on so it could be heard., They probably got a lot of hiss/noise in the process because there wasn't a strong enough signal on the original tape, and the high level on the new master could have caused what is known as print through, which is more noise due to magnetic transfer of sound information to the next lower turn of the tape on the reel. Somes times it sounds like an echo when it is played because of the same signal is in two places on the same tape, one at the set level and one very faint where the print through has contaminated the next layer of tape on the reel. Where tape is not used anymore it's not a problem in today's modern studios, but in Jim's day, tape was all that was available.
Regards,
Don
