Frank, I always had this same impression...especially after hearing the line "...even though the winds were quiet, the sands did not lie still". Anyway, beautiful song from one of my very favorite albums by Jim, "Talkin'To Your Heart".

: I've always thought that the
: "secret" is that the Shifting
: Whispering Sands themselves explain:
: "Where was everyone?
: Why the white bones?
: The dry wells?
: The barren valley,
: Where people must have lived and died."
: In other words, the Sands themselves ARE the
: secret, or the answer, to why the prospector
: found what he did. It is a secret because
: others do not know about the S-W Sands, and
: the teller of the story is telling US about
: them. When he says "I'm sure you'll
: learn the story..." he is just saying
: "go see for yourselves what the S-W
: Sands are doing."
: IMHO.

: I don't know the answer, but found this
: interesting website

: As I researched I found at least one other
: site that also feature's Jim's version of
: this song.

: I drive a lot now for my business and the
: other morning I was listening to Jim's
: recitations. For 40 years it's been
: bothering me. What WAS the secret of the
: shifting whispering sands? Has anybody ever
: figure it out? Something to with the old
: miner and burrows breaking their halters. Is
: the whole point that we are not supposed to
: know?
:
: On the other hand no recitation I ever heard
: matches the majesty of "Spell of the
: Yukon." Literally produces chills!
