I've always thought that the "secret" is that the Shifting Whispering Sands themselves explain:
"Where was everyone?
Why the white bones?
The dry wells?
The barren valley,
Where people must have lived and died."
In other words, the Sands themselves ARE the secret, or the answer, to why the prospector found what he did. It is a secret because others do not know about the S-W Sands, and the teller of the story is telling US about them. When he says "I'm sure you'll learn the story..." he is just saying "go see for yourselves what the S-W Sands are doing."
IMHO.
