The Shifting, Whispering Sands

I drive a lot now for my business and the other morning I was listening to Jim's recitations. For 40 years it's been bothering me. What WAS the secret of the shifting whispering sands? Has anybody ever figure it out? Something to with the old miner and burrows breaking their halters. Is the whole point that we are not supposed to know?

On the other hand no recitation I ever heard matches the majesty of "Spell of the Yukon." Literally produces chills!
