There have been so many stories about Jim's trip to Arkansas, but Larry is correct when he states that Jim just wanted company with him when he was on a trip. It just makes for a better trip when you have someone to converse with. Jim asked only a few to go on this trip with him. However, now that he is gone many claim to have been asked. He would have had to rent a jet to to carry all these people!

To my knowledge, he asked Ray Baker who could not go as he was doing a demo session for our company on that very day and he had asked Hank Cochran who had a prior engagement, so he then asked Dean and felt that Dean would be the better one to go since he did have relatives in the very area that Jim was interested in. Those are the only ones that I am positive that Jim asked to accompany him. Larry has more information about Dean asking Leo and Bud if they wanted to go. I was not even aware that he had done this. However, that wasn't Jim inviting them. People have even tried to convince me that Jim had called them, but that is just not the case. You have to realize just how close mine and Jim's desks were and most of the time I made the calls for him and did the majority of the phone answering, so I just did not not place these calls to all these people and neither did I answer the phone to all the people. I'm just trying to set the record straight...All these people that claim that Jim asked them to go on this trip just flat did not take place.

Hope this clears things up a bit and yes, he did fuel up in Batesville and yes, he was in touch with the tower in Dyresburg checking on the status of the weather in Nashville and they gave him an all clear report.

Jim did only have visibility license which meant he did not fly at night time and had had very little instrument training.
