The story may have been referring to its time on the Hot 100. I notice it peaked at #33 there. Even though records remained on the chart much longer then than they do now, I doubt it would have stayed even in the top 100 that long since it only topped out at 33.

: Steve,
: Hot Rod Lincoln was on the Billboard
: Country Chart for 6 weeks (not months)
: debuting on 9/5/60 and peaking at #14. It
: was Charlie Ryan and the Timberline Riders'
: only chart record and was on the 4 Star
: label where Patsy Cline was when she
: started. Two other versions charted,
: Commander Cody hit #51 on Paramount Records
: in 1972 and Asleep At The Wheel hit #65 on
: Epic Records in 1988. Johnny Bond one of
: Jim's buddies who appeared with Jim on the
: Town Hall Party in 1959, had it out also on
: Starday in the '60s also but it didn't
: chart. The I's have it plays Jonnny's
: version on their stations.

: Regards,
: Don

: Just picked this up off the net.
:
: SPOKANE, Wash. -- Charles Ryan, the musician
: and songwriter who co-wrote the hit song
: "Hot Rod Lincoln," has died. He
: was 92.
:
: Ryan died Saturday after a long battle with
: heart disease, his family said.
:
: Ryan and W.S. Stevenson wrote "Hot Rod
: Lincoln" and Ryan first recorded it in
: 1955. The song was inspired by his commutes
: in his 1941 Lincoln from Spokane to play
: gigs at the Paradise Club in Lewiston,
: Idaho. It has been recorded many times
: since.
:
: He worked as a musician and songwriter,
: touring with Jim Reeves, Johnny Horton and
: others.
:
: Ryan's version of "Hot Rod
: Lincoln" hit the Billboard Top 100
: charts in 1960 and stayed there for six
: months. Many versions exist, with the words
: often altered by each new group.
:
: Ryan is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of
: Fame.
