Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Prior to CDs and the internet, I don't think there are too many artists who had done their own label successfully. (You may have more info on that, Don.)
Think what an expanded volume of work we would have if he had lived. Yet, we have not witnessed Jim age, miss a note, or weaken. (on the other hand Ray Price's voice was remarkably strong when I heard him a few years ago.) There is something iconic about an artist "trapped in time" at 40 years-old and at the top of his career.
I wonder, since they were contemporaries of Jim, one performing, th whether not, how many CDs does Eddy and Ray sell a year, compared to Jim? I know Amazon will not have nearly as many titles listed. And of course this would have to be world-wide. I know that "12 Songs of Christmas" sells very well each year.
Regards, Bob

: Steve,
: He had his own label, Shannon Records,
: but he wasn't on it, because RCA had the
: contract with him, probably an exclusive
: one. My understanding was that he used it
: to try to promote new talent. The Jim
: Reeves Story tape produced by Mary from the
: 1984 radio special however, was a Shannon
: Records release, but it gave credit to RCA
: for all the the recordings on there that Jim
: did that RCA owned the masters to. Now when
: his last contract would have been up he
: could have started recording on his own
: label had he have lived that long.
:
: We made it back from Nashville tonight OK
: (the Mary Robbins exhibit at the CMHOF was
: really great as was the guitar player David
: Andersen who played Welcome To My World and
: He'll Have to Go for us ala Chet Atkins on
: his Epiphone guitar. We are now looking
: forward to Christmas and the New Year ahead.
: Also great to see Joyce posting her Seasons
: Greetings, hope she and everyone else that
: contributes or visits the JRW Fan Forum has
: a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year!

: Regards,
: Don

: I enjoyed reading your post and glad to know
: that folks in the UK are still able to enjoy
: Jim's music. Had Jim lived and remained in
: good health I could see him still performing
: much like Ray Price who still sounds great
: at 80. No doubt Jim and RCA would have
: parted company and he probably would have
: started his own label. Have a Merry
: Christmas.

: First of all, merry christmas everyone. I am
: from Norfolk, UK. Last night on our local
: radio station a request show was on. I asked
: for Old Christmas Card and luckily it was
: played. The surprising and pleasing thing
: about this was the ripples it caused. So
: many listeners phoned in to say how great
: the song was and how good it was to hear
: Jim's voice.
: I personally can see, I suppose being biased
: towards Jim, that his music, voice and
: popularity can last forever, not based on
: the playing of one song but for a quality I
: don't think any other singer has.
: I also wonder, given the fact how fickle the
: music industry is, if Jim would have stayed
: with RCA. Would his contract be have been
: renewed or would he have tried other labels.
: Also, and a contradiction in terms, would he
: have been as popular now if he had lived?
: This writer knows that no matter the mood I
: can play some favourite tracks of Jim and
: somehow it seems for a while all is at peace
: with the world. No other singer, in my
: opinion, can come close to that.
: I hope you all have a good one
: Keith.
