Don, thank you for mentioning the anniversary of ‘He’ll have to go’. The recording certainly made history in Great Britain.
It was Jim’s first hit, entering the Pop Singles Chart March 24th 1960, peaking at No.12 (or No.11 in some charts) and remaining for 31 weeks. The long run made the song 8th best charter of the year. According the ‘The Record Retailer’ magazine it was still selling well at the time of his death in July 1964.
Jim is one of Elton John’s favourite singers and he considered recording ‘He’ll have to go’ but decided not to, as he believed he would not be able to top Jim’s version.
Jim charted annually in the British Pop Singles charts from 1960 to 1972 and was one of only four artists to have an entry every year of the 1960 decade, the other three being Elvis Presley, Cliff Richard, and Roy Orbison.
