Happy Mothers Day Tommorrow!
Mexican Joe, Country Chart wise, in 1953 was a much bigger hit than the Oak Ridge Boys' Elvira in 1981, but Elvira sold over 2 million, so by sales it was bigger than Jim's song. Mexican Joe is listed in Joel Whitburn's latest Billboard Book of Top 40 Country Hits Second Edition, 2006 Billboard Books, as the #55 Country song of all time spending a high of 9 weeks at #1 (Juke Box Chart) and a high of 26 weeks total on that chart (Elvira was #1 for 1 week and on the charts 9 weeks in 1981). Mexican Joe was #1 on three different Billboard Country Charts in 1953 (in addition to 9 weeks at #1 on the Juke Box Chart, it was #1 for 7 Weeks on the Disc Jockey Chart and #1 for 6 weeks on the Best Seller Chart. If they mentioned the sales end of it, they would be right, but Billboard Country Chart wise, Jim wins with Mexican Joe hands down, not even close!
