The film whose title I'm trying to remember opens in a synagogue and we see the women upstairs behind the wooden lattice or screen. The rabbi is our heroine's father. The next scene is of her leaving the synagogue and walking through the narrow streets of the shtetl out onto the streets of the larger town itself. Eventually, she leaves home and takes a job in the household of a non-Jew. It's in this second life that she learns about photography and she develops an innovative developing process, but that's a secondary or tertiary aspect of her life as narrated in the film. We all know the actor but my long-term memory has let that slip away, even though I can see her face. HELP!
