Unfortunately it is easier to fear and say something is bad when you don't understand it. Try telling your father that while you are trying to respect how he feels, might he also give you a bit of respect as well and at least read some of what you are wanting to study. Knowledge never hurt anybody, and that way he can make a truly informed decision based upon what he has read for himself not upon what he has heard.
