Posted by Lark on 7/20/2007, 3:04 pm, in reply to "Re: Irritating nonfacts" Professor Hutton not only writes about Wicca, he is also a Wiccan Initiate from a British Traditional group. I think that it would be foolish to discount his writings and say he doesn't know what he's talking about. All branches of Wicca are offshoots of Gardnerian Wicca. They draw on the ideas and teachings put forward by Gardner. So in that respect, Gardner is the Father of Wicca and the person who created the religion. While ohers may have formed their own Traditions..such as the one of which I am HPS..we all acknowledge Gardner as the founder of Wicca. In addition, I have had several conversations with a gentleman in Britain who was actually a member of Gardner's first coven. He also will tell you that there was NO Wicca prior to Gerald Gardner; although there could have been other forms of religious Witchcraft. -Lark-

Professor Ronald Hutton is the chair of the History Department of the University of Bristol. He has spent several decades studying the Pagan religions of Britain, both ancient and modern. When he wrote "Triumph of the Moon" he spent several years doing research including interviewing people who were there when Gardner founded Wicca. All evidence, including the interviews, shows that there was NO religion called Wicca until Gerald Gardner put it together.
