i caught a glimpse once. i was a nobody so i elaborated
on it endlessly. though no one was paying attention. after
all who would take the word of someone as uneducated
& shabby looking as me seriously. i draw my latest
conclusion then stick it on the wall until the humidity drops
the subject. it doesn’t require a fancy frame. it doesn’t have
to be seen to be believed. think too much about an idea, no
matter how brilliant & bury it six feet under technique &
theory. so deep it’s never observed, never questioned. a
prime cut does the latest dance craze & wears the right
brand. a couple weeks later it’s gone small town & a week
after that it’s passe¢. a monosyllable-speaking idiot poses
a phrase, & soon you hear it everywhere you go. a college
campus with aesthetically pleasing architecture & yard work
is filled with elegantly decked out mannequins who can’t
carry on an intelligent conversation. a bitter streak can’t help
but rear its ugly head & turn hearts to stone. this isn’t
to deny it’s not justified, but it is impolite to point after all.
it’s considered bad form to refuse a spin on fortune’s wheel.
art has become too quiet or gone underground, but it’s
always been afraid of getting caught, with a few exceptions.
a hip decadence is permitted in the door. it makes good
copy after all. the privileged can go slumming on weekends.
chipping away at entertainment while politely applauding
or giggling at desperate freak shows that only make me
want to cry.
