Posted by Pauline The will of William DORE of Freshwater, IOW, was proved 6.July.1784. Beneficiaries were: Wife, Rebecca. All these beneficiaries were mentioned in the will dated 9.May.1774. I don't think Rebecca was the mother of any of these children. Ancestry has the following marriage licence allegation: Dore, William, of Freshwater, husbandman, 20 [sic], widower, & Rebecca Cotton, of the same, 21, spinster, 30 Jun 1770. I think William was older than 20. Could 20 have been a misreading of 40? Here is a possible candidate: William Dore Afton was possibly a misreading of Easton. I could not find William’s first marriage. The IGI mentions a William “of Freshwater” marrying a Mrs Mary Dore in about 1749. This seems to be speculation. The following baptisms (all children of William & Mary Dore) were at Easton or Freshwater: Anne Dore (This could be Anna). William Dore Mary Dore (This could also be Anna). James Dore James Dore Perhaps James was born in Dec.1762 and baptised in Jan.1763. The following seems to be the marriage of William junior, b.c. 1752: William Dore I think it possible that William Dore/Rebackah Smith were the parents of the children baptised in Tyneham, Dorset, between 1774 and 1782, i.e. William (1774), Sally (1774), Mary (1777), Anna (1780) & Robert (1782). A further Tyneham baptism, in 1784, was of James, son of William & Mary (sic). However, I could not find the burial of Rebeckah or the remarriage of William to Mary. I think William junior and family may have left Tyneham to return to Freshwater on the death of William senior in 1784. William senior’s will mentions his estate called ?Povington in the county of Dorset. Perhaps Povington was in Tyneham. My ancestors are Anna Dore of Freshwater and Robert Cull, yeoman of Worth (Matravers) who married in Tyneham on 30.May.1775. It seems probable that Anna was living with her brother, William. There was another couple having children baptised in Tyneham a few years earlier. John and Mary Dore’s children were Molly (1768), John (1769), Anna (1771) and Anne (1773). Perhaps William Dore junior took over the estate from this John Dore. The A2A website has the following: Assignment of mortgate dated 1.June.1768 re John Dore, late of Freshwater, blacksmith, and now of the Island of Purbeck, co. Dorset, yeoman. Tyneham is in Purbeck. A2A also mentions John Dore of parish of Freshwater, blacksmith, son of Ann Dore (widow, late called Ann Warder). The IGI has: John Dore Could this John Dore be a second cousin to William Dore junior and his siblings? John Dore of Freshwater was one of the executors of the will (written in 1774) of William Dore senior, who died in 1784. William junior was also an executor. The other executors, all of Freshwater, were Ephraim Smith, John White and Thomas Woodford. The witnesses were Benjamin Jolliffe, James Newland & Richard Clarke. A codicil, written on 25.Apr.1784, in favour of James Dore, son of William senior, mentioned property in Freshwater, i.e. Blackbridge Farm, ?Pedlar’s Tenement and White’s Tenement. The codicil was witnessed by John White, Jno King & Richard Clarke. When the will was proved in London on 6.July.1784, it seems John Dore had “first renounced the execution thereof”. I wonder if the witnesses and executors of William Dore’s will were his kinsmen, in which case, these Dores seem to belong to your group B. Pauline
