Posted by Breathing on 10/27/2004, 2:42 pm, in reply to "Male Counselor or Female Counselor?" but still i think i know what you mean....i've been in counseling twice in my life. Once abourt 10 years ago after a 7 year long relationship ended, and then again a year ago for several months (couples counseling mostly but some IC sessions) - - different counselors. and i did want the C to suggest theories, ideas, and even actions / steps to take. some times I'd dismiss it (if they suggested an underlying reason that I knew wasn't relevant) and sometimes I think it would help the self discovery process along. hmmm whether to change or not...the only thing is: it means a new person has to get up to speed on you as a person. if you have the time and money, i suppose it is an option? just thinking out loud here.
in my opinion it's likely more directly related to the counselor's personality. i know what you mean....you want a counselor to suggest more specific actions. i think many C's want to avoid "telling" you what to do. the whole idea of counseling is exploring your feelings, psyche, value system, and figuring it out for yourself.
