Well if you used 6 (8 max) light sensors, and 6 laser pointers (they cost about 1$ now). And bought a PC-GADGET II , and programmed yer own code to count the light breaks.. and put a piece of tape on the antenaa at diff hieghts for each car... you could make one for under 300$. I saw a site were they used this meathod on a more expensive computer device... but forgot url. The PC Gadget also operates stepper motors.. so you cold have a starting gate open/close hehe...
