With the world having so many unwanted horses, I am having difficulty trying to figure out what to do with this mare.
Jockey Club registered, named Orchidist, ...I've always called her Pokey.
This is her story as I know it.
She was born in Canada in Feb about 19 years ago. She has old blood but I have not seen the pedigree for 6 years or so. ...having an old famous horse that name escapes me now, starts with N...and I believe a horse named Bulldog. Not that it matters now.
She raced for 6 or 7 years, made around $30,000 and was sold for another $30,000.
I believe that the buyer was unable to get her bred because she gets pretty wound up if kept in a stall.
Some lady bought her for $6,000 and was forced to ride her every day to let off steam or she became too hot to handle. The story I got.
I paid $1700 for her and began to call her Slow Poke....just to be funny. It was either the Summer of 2000 or 2001, not sure.
I pulled her shoes immediately being in the natural hoof mentality. Her circulation in her feet must have been terrible as she could not grow any hoof for many years.
I rode her on trails the first couple years but then as her feet began to get their feeling back, the hooves only grew on the inside, flaring....and I quit riding her. Giving her time to heal. Just talking front feet. Back feet have always been fine.
Pokey was a dream to ride. Very light handed. Extremely willing to please. Loads of fun. A truly beautiful mind. I love this horse.
I have not ridden her in 6 years. Her feet are doing pretty good now. Not perfect but not bad.
Her problem lies now in a big knee. It is not real big but it is bad enough that she limps and it is obvious that it hurts.
I convince myself that she needs put down but then I go to brush her and change my mind every time.
I have 2 mules, a percheron, 2 morgans, and a morgan x percheron....and I really need to do something with Pokey.
I sure would like to give her to somebody. There is a chance that I can pay a Vet School to put her down and study her ailment.
I wish I'd have had her as a baby.
She is 16.1 maybe 16.1 1/2. I was told she was 16.2 when I bought her. High withers. Tall and narrow. She was gray with black mane and points when I got her but every year her coat got better and she showed more red flea specks. Her coat this Winter has never been better.
I'm open to any suggestions.
I sure don't want her taking a ride to hell in a double decker trailer to Mexico.
I'm currently located in South Eastern Ohio...1/2 hour south of Zanesville. Blue Rock area.
