Hey all....
My mother runs a horse rescue in central Colorado. Over the 8 years it has been open her neighbors have harassed her (anonymously). Today's events took the cake! They called the county police department and had them look at the horses. I've written a letter, and I want to get some feedback if I may. Also, I have heard that it is a federal offence to countinuly harass a 501c3 rescue that has never had any issues, is this true?
The statement I wrote:
My heart breaks as I listen to people who pull down those who try to help animals in need. A wonderful horse rescue in central Colorado has been harassed by its neighbors over the 8 years since it has been open. Threats, letters of ignorance (unsigned of course, because people don’t want to admit their ignorance), police being summoned, etc. Needless to say this horse rescue is ALWAYS in need of help, monetary and physical, as is any rescue, however the animals are NEVER neglected, or underfed. There are reasons why things are done in a certain way, and if people would ASK when they had questions, instead of causing trouble, this world would be a much better place! If a horse is thin, would you give it lots of room to run and burn up calories??? No, you would feed it extra hay, grain and possibly beet pulp, and keep them in a smaller area to put weight on them. This rescue is a 501 ( c ) 3, and the 65 year old woman who runs it, is always there to lend a hand to any animal in need, many unwanted animals have just “shown up” in the middle of the night. People have taken advantage of this golden hearted woman, because she tries to help the human animals also, and that needs to stop. The only “thin looking” animals on her property are a 36 year old mare, and a 41 year old mule….these are extreme ages for any equine! In fact, there is a geriatric pasture, for horses with no teeth, who have to eat watered down (for softness), grains and hay pellets, as they would literally choke to death on regular baled hays. On that same subject, people trespassing on the property and giving carrots, apples, and whatever other treat they “feel” like giving to the horses, some of these horses could literally choke to death on a treat, would these trespassers know how to save them if they started to choke?
Today feels like the last straw in the harassing treatment, as a police officer pulls into the horse rescue driveway. The officer looks around, speaks with the woman running the horse rescue about how she manages, how much and when she feeds, waters, etc. When he leaves, he says these animals look wonderful. She asked, “Can we file a false police report? Can I take any legal action against the harassment?” He says, “No because people are looking out for the welfare of the animals.” What a bunch of horse manure! Go harass the people who are no good animal abusers, and child molesters! If you are ignorant, ask, she would be more then happy to help you understand each and every one of their stories! From abuse and neglect, to content and fat! If you feel that the animal rescues are not doing enough, then donate some of your fortunes to them, so they may do better! Instead of building a beautiful barn to store your “toys” in, donate one to a needy horse rescue! But for heaven’s sake DO NOT look down your snooty noses at these wonderful rescues and complain, because she and all the other animal rescuers are doing things you are not willing to do. Take care of needy animals, that means feed, water, medically treat, brush, trim, and last, but certainly not least love! Do yourselves a favor and donate some of your precious time, and/or money, and please do not be ignorant any more.
And btw, if you'd like to see it, it is http://heavensgatewayhorserescue.com/, the website is still a work in progress, however, it does show you some of our precious 4 leggeds!
