Definitely have his teeth checked. Our palomino gelding is 32 and last summer was dropping weight. The dentist came out and found one tooth absessed and another that fell right out when he pulled just a little on it! He eats Blue Seal Trotter along with sweet feed - he can chew the grass and hay better now also, so he is doing well.
